Screen Time

There is little doubt that we are living in the "Computer Age" and it is here to stay. Computers, HDTV, hand held video games and cell phones are now a regular part of American society. We receive many benefits from these wonderful inventions.

However, when it comes to children, many organizations, from pediatricians to educators, are sending out warning signals indicating that "screen time," especially when it comes to pre-school kids, really needs to be monitored or eliminated by parents. By "screen time" we are talking about watching TV, playing video games (on TV, computers, or the hand held type), and being on the computer.

The problem seems to be that passively sitting in front of a "screen" for extended periods of time, hinders growth in other vital areas, including socialization, motor skills, and problem solving. In our busy lives, all of us, parents and grandparents alike, have had the occasion to allow screens to baby-sit for our children.

If our kids are to have less screen time, what are they to do? How about board games, card games, or activity games with other members of the family? Kids love to help cook and prepare meals. Yard work or house work does not have to be a chore for a child, especially if it involves time with mom or dad, grandma or grandpa.

I am not saying that time watching TV, being on the computer, or playing video games is totally bad for the kids. But I am saying that parents and grandparents need to set time limits for their use. It is OK for parents to say "No" when children ask to play video games. It is alright to say, "Yes, but only for 30 minutes." if a child asks to watch TV.

New technology is wonderful, especially if it is handled in a healthy way. Continue to ask the question, "Is it good for the children?"
